Facing Changes? Rise to the Challenge!

Facing Changes? Rise to the Challenge!

Change is a constant in military life, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Whether you’re relocating for a new assignment, stepping into a leadership role, facing relationship challenges, grieving a loss, or transitioning back home after a deployment, each shift comes with its own physical and emotional challenges. During stressful times, alcohol use can sometimes increase—but there are healthier, more effective ways to manage stress and stay mission-ready.

Here are five tips to stay on course:

1. Prioritize your mental health. Mental fitness is key to navigating change. Simple tools like deep breathing, workouts, or music can boost mood and focus. Drinking less supports mental clarity and emotional balance.

2. Focus on what you can control. You can’t always control circumstances, but you can choose how you respond. Shift your mindset, stay active, and know your limits. Low-risk drinking helps you stay sharp and in control.

3. Manage stress with healthy strategies. Alcohol can amplify stress. Instead, try structured routines or to-do lists. Identify your stressors and tackle them with a clear head.

4. Lean on your support network. Even when change feels overwhelming, you don’t have to deal with it alone. Talk to fellow Marines, family, or friends. Chances are, they’ve been through something similar and can offer solid support.

5. Use your resources. Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) offers tools for life’s transitions, such as financial planning, relocation help, family support, and more.

Change can be difficult, but there are ways to make it easier. If you notice you’re relying on alcohol to cope, take a moment to check in with yourself. Reach out to your local Substance Assessment and Counseling Center—to explore resources and get additional information. You’re never alone. We’re in this together.
