Gold Star Mother’s and Family's Day

Gold Star Mother’s and Family's Day

Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, observed annually on the last Sunday in September, is a solemn occasion that honors the profound sacrifice of families who have lost a loved one in military service. This national observance recognizes the strength, resilience, and enduring legacy of Gold Star families—those who live with the loss of a service member who died in the line of duty.

A Legacy of Honor and Remembrance

The tradition of honoring Gold Star Families dates back to World War I, when military families displayed service flags with a blue star to represent an actively serving loved one. If that service member died in combat, the blue star was replaced with a gold star—a symbol of ultimate sacrifice.

This symbol inspired the founding of the American Gold Star Mothers organization in 1982. In 1936, Congress designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day, a day to recognize mothers who had lost children in military service. Over time, this observance evolved in include all surviving family members, leading to the broader recognition we now know as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day.

Honoring Gold Star Families Across the Nation

Each year, military installations, veterans’ organizations, nonprofits, and local communities host events and ceremonies to commemorate this day and honor those left behind. These gatherings serve as a powerful reminder that the sacrifices of our service members—and their families—will never be forgotten.

The Marine Corps’ Long Term Assistance Program (LTAP) share information on Gold Star events across the country, ensuring Marine Corps families have the opportunity to participate, connect, and find support.
