Tuition Assistance Update


TA Changes effective 23 FEB 2016 per MARADMIN 093/16:

  1. All first-time Tuition Assistance Applicants are required to complete the online Higher Education Preparation (HEP) course prior to approval for tuition assistance.

TA Changes effective 1 OCT 2014 per DODI 1322.25:

  1. Successful course completion will be defined as a grade of "C" or higher for undergraduate courses, a "B" or higher for graduate courses, and a "Pass" for "Pass/Fail" courses.
  2. Fees no longer covered by TA include: equipment, supplies, exams, and costs associated with distance learning. 
  3. TA will be authorized for graduate studies through the master's degree level; doctoral programs will not be funded.
  4. Only schools with an approved DOD Voluntary Education Partnership MOU are eligible to participate in DOD Voluntary Education programs including, military tuition assistance.

Tuition Assistance

Marine Tuition Assistance (TA) is available for all active duty Marines. Each member receives $4500.00 per fiscal year (1 Oct-30 Sep). There is a cap of $250 per semester hour, $166.67 per quarter hour, and $16.67 per clock hour. Tuition assistance is also available to Reservists on continuous active duty, enlisted Reservists ordered to active duty 120 days, and to Reservist Officers ordered to active duty for two years or more. Please read the following for information about Military TA:


  • Are required to complete the Higher Education Preparation online course.
  • Minimum time in service of 24 months per active duty base date.
  • Must have a minimum GT score of 100 or a minimum TABE score of 10.2.
  • Must complete Marine Corps Institute (MCI) Personal Financial Management (Course ID 3420G).
  • TA shall be authorized for first-time TA applicants for only one course, unless documentation is provided that the Marine has at least an Associate’s degree or at least 60 academic credits (credits earned through Joint Services Transcript do not count towards this requirement) and a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Restrictions on Tuition Assistance

  1. TA cannot be used if applicant has had or is pending disciplinary action.
  2. TA cannot be used to pay for flight training.
  3. TA cannot be used by reservists if not on continuous active duty, by enlisted reservists if ordered to active duty less than 120 days, or by reservist officers if ordered to active duty for less than two years or more.
  4. TA cannot be used by those in duty-under-instruction status or in an officer accession program involving full time instruction at a civilian institution.
  5. TA will only be approved for courses scheduled for one academic term at a time.
  6. TA will not be authorized for the same course previously funded by TA.
  7. Up-front TA funding is not provided for courses if the institutions drop/add period or late registration date has passed.
  8. Reimbursement of TA funds must be made by money order or cashier's check payable to U.S. Treasurer and mailed to NETPDTC.
  9. TA cannot be approved retroactively. TA applications must be submitted and command approved prior to the requested course start date.
  10. Marines must earn a grade of C or higher or P for passing all non-graduate level coursework, and B or higher for graduate level courses.
  11. Marines are required to refund the U.S. Treasury for letter grades of (D) and below at the undergraduate level, (C) and below for graduate level, (F) failed courses, unresolved incompletes (I), or courses from which the Marine voluntarily withdrew, resulting in a (W) grade. Fees directly required for course enrollment may be combined with tuition. However the following fees are no longer covered by TA: equipment, supplies, exams, and costs associated with distance learning. The Marine Corps will only pay fees that are published, mandatory, charged for course enrollment, and reimbursable in the event the student needs to withdraw from the course. The rules and regulations regarding TA can be found in MCO 1560.25 and DODI 1322.25

New Web-Based Tuition Assistance

Tuition Assistance Applications can be processed using the WebTA system on MCB Quantico, please follow this link to submit your application.

Upon completion of your WebTA, you will receive an email of approval or disapproval of Tuition Assistance by the Quantico Voluntary Education Center. You may review the status of your TA application by selecting the URL in the email or by logging into your WEB TA account.

CAUTION: When filling out the “Applicant Information” section, be conscious of the following:

  • (#8) You will be asked to provide your “CO or By Direction Authority’s E-Mail Address”: if you do not know who your command has authorized to approve TA, please call your education office or your command to verify.
  • (#15) When asked to verify your “Command Address” and your “Assigned Education Office”, ensure that it properly reflects MCB Quantico if you are assigned here. If the proper base is not identified, use the drop down menu provided to manually change the information.


  • Return to  WEB TA
  • Click on Existing Applications
  • Click View for Existing Applications in Authorized status
  • Click Print Document
  • After printing, sign and deliver the copy to your school
